Ik ben een boom is an intimate, exploratory journey into masculinity, fatherhood and the legacy of our forefathers. When Jozefien Mombaerts becomes the mother of a son, she unexpectedly comes up against the structures of patriarchy and the persistent role models that shape our imagination. What does it mean today to raise a boy? Where can we find alternatives to the loudest voices in the debate? And which old images of fatherhood do we unconsciously carry with us: the father who is louder in his silence than in his breathing, the emotionally unavailable father, the drunk father? Through a female perspective, she attempts to break open the imagination surrounding masculinity, whilst at the same time speaking honestly about her own fears, desires and doubts.
Together with Joeri Cnapelinckx, she embarks on this musical literary road trip. Jozefien worked with Joeri Cnapelinckx as a musician on both Een pleidooi voor zelfmoord and Gij zijt het. Joeri always manages, according to the demands of the drama, to create the right atmosphere or to suggest answers to unanswered questions through sound and music. In this way, everything left unsaid in the text is given a place. He does not create a soundtrack that merely serves the performance; he helps to create the world for the story.
Can we imagine a different man — and do we dare to give him the space to grow?
Kijk & luister
